WTF!!!
From appearances, the Bloodhound supersonic road vehicle looks like it was designed for interplanetary travel rather than Earthly meandering. But the UK-designed vehicle will in fact attempt to smash the land-speed record sometime in late 2012 when the car could reach velocities in excess of 1,000 mph.
After spending three years in the design phase, construction on the Bloodhound is set to begin this week. The 42-foot long Bloodhound has a body made from carbon fiber and titanium that is able to withstand air pressure of more than 12 tons per square meter. It's powered by a jet engine positioned above a hybrid rocket which combine into a 135,000 horsepower burst of speed. It runs on nearly three-foot wide tires made from an aluminum alloy which are built to withstand the onslaught of the elements at 10,000 rpm. It will take 40 seconds for the Bloodhound to reach top velocity which it will maintain for less than four seconds.
The Bloodhound team hopes to attempt the speed record on a dried out lake bed in South Africa's Northern Cape sometime late next year. The car will be driven by RAF fighter pilot Andy Green who set the reigning land speed record in 1997 while driving the Thrust SSC vehicle which achieved a top speed of 760 mph.
It's all completely impractical, of course.
But most cool things are.
