Microsoft y Libre Office para Android
« : octubre 10, 2012, 03:00:21 pm »
Saludos.

Tiempos atras se venía escuchando la posibilidad de una versión de MS office para Android y pues resulta que  Petr Bobek el "product manager" dijo que Microsoft esta planeando sacar una versión tanto para IOS como Android.

We've known for months that Microsoft was bringing a version of Microsoft Office 2013 to Android tablets and Apple's iPad family. Now, according to the Czech tech news site, IHNED, Microsoft product manager Petr Bobek has said that Microsoft is planning to release native iOS and Android versions of Office 2013 in the first quarter of 2013

Bobek, a Microsoft Office portfolio manager in the Czech Republic, said that these new versions of Office will be available to larger companies and Microsoft partners In December 2012. small-office/home-office (SOHO) and household users will have to wait until at least February. The online version of Office 365 edition for mobile devices and tablets will appear in early 2013.

In an e-mail, the author of the INHED story clarified that the release would be after March 2013. "We had a slight miscommunication with the MS guys and the timeline for Office for iOS and Android is not a March release, but release sometime after March."

Officially, the only thing Microsoft had to say at first was that "As we shared previously, Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS, and we have nothing additional to announce today about retail availability of the new Office."

Later the same day, Microsoft's head of corporate communications, Frank X. Shaw, denied the whole story. Shaw tweeted, "The information shared by our Czech Republic subsidiary is not accurate. We have nothing further to share."

No matter when Microsoft delivers the Android and iOS goods, Microsoft's support of any version of Office on a non-Windows smartphone or tablet strikes me as an odd move. In a shareholder letter, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Microsoft is shifting its model to focus on devices and services. This is a radical and dangerous shift for a company that's always made it money from software licensing. And, now, instead of using Office as a crowbar to pry users from iPads and Android tablets to its Surface tablets, Microsoft is going to offer Office 2013 on its device rivals? Odd. Very odd.

Historically, Microsoft has locked its customers into its software ecosystem. Since Microsoft is a non-starter in the mobile space, I find it surprising that they're not trying to exploit its Office suite in a similar manner in this new market.

That said, given the early reports of Office 2013, which didn't even have touch enabled for its tablet versions by default, I don't see Google, with Google Docs and QuickOffice, being worried about Microsoft being a rival on either devices or services anytime soon.

Updated with correction on releae date by Otakar Schon, the author of the orginial Czech story and Microsoft's denial of the story.

A su vez para no abrir otro topic por lo visto también se viene Libre Office para Android  :)

We've known for some time already that an Android version of LibreOffice was on the way sooner or later, and earlier this week Michael Meeks, a Linux desktop architect at SUSE who coordinates LibreOffice development work, provided an update.

libreoffice
Even as the software's developers work on the desktop version of LibreOffice 3.6.0, the Android version of the popular open source productivity suite is apparently coming along nicely as well, Meeks reports.

In fact, Google Summer of Code participant Iain Billet is “working hard to make a nice viewer out of LibreOffice for Android,” Meeks wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.

Specifically, Billet is apparently working on a Java viewer interface for LibreOffice that will “integrate nicely into the platform and provide fast pan/zoom/page-flip browsing and all that good stuff you expect,” he explained.

A number of other advancements have been made on the software as well, Meeks says. Here are some of the highlights to date.

1. Cross-Compilation

Cross-compilation to both Android and iOS works “rather acceptably,” Meeks said. “Almost the entire code-base cross-compiles out of the box,” in fact.

2. Basic System Functions

Basic system functions and bootstrapping work for the new LibreOffice for Android, Meeks said. Packaging, signing, installing, and running “works reasonably reliably,” and the software can now pass a number of LibreOffice unit tests.

All in all, however, the current state is still “a fairly horrific, bolts and all, barely usable (even with keyboard and mouse) office suite on your tablet,” admitted Meeks, who offered the picture below.

LibreOffice for Android's user interface is still "utterly horrible for a tablet device," developer Michael Meeks says. (Click image to enlarge.)
3. Tiled Page Rendering

Meanwhile, though, work is also being done on tiled page rendering to textures. “That will allow us to quickly render portions of document content at any scale, asynchronously in a background thread, to suit the viewer,” he added.

A viewer/file-manager shell is already in place to allow managing and selecting documents on the SD card.

4. Ongoing Work

Included among the ongoing work on the software's new viewer is a move to a new linker for faster startup as well as expanded page rendering abstractions for spreadsheets and presentations, and a new focus on Android/x86, Meeks wrote.

Also on the way are “tons of UI/viewer improvements, 3D transitions, pretty page flips, and more,” he added.

For the future, the project team plans to add editing functionality, Meeks concluded. “That brings plenty of challenges, particularly around re-using existing code and widgets in a tasteful way.”

COmo que ya está confirmado la salida de MS office para diferentes plataformas en el 2013.

Por lo visto office mobiles tendrá primero un lanzamiento en iOs pero al ratito saldrá para Android

Microsoft's Office for iPad, iPhone, and Android is a reality. Although Office Mobile has been rumored and reportedly spotted in the wild, Microsoft has remained persistently quiet about its plans for the product. The Verge has learned through several sources close to Microsoft's plans that the company will release Office versions for Android and iOS in early 2013.

Iosoffice_560

Office Mobile will debut in the form of free apps that allow Android and iOS users to view Microsoft Office documents on the move. Like the existing SkyDrive and OneNote apps, Office Mobile will require a Microsoft account. On first launch, a Microsoft account will provide access to the basic viewing functionality in the apps. Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents will all be supported, and edit functionality can be enabled with an Office 365 subscription.

Microsoft will allow iOS users to purchase an Office 365 subscription within the app, or let organizations distribute codes to enable Office Mobile editing for users. The apps will allow for basic editing, but we're told this won't go very far in attempting to replace regular full use of a desktop Office version.

"It's real and it's coming to iOS first"

A recent Microsoft press release from the company's Czech Republic subsidiary revealed that Office Mobile apps for Android and iOS would be made available from March 2013. We understand that Office Mobile for iOS will arrive first in late February or early March, with an Android version due in May.

We reached out to Microsoft for comment on this story and a company spokesperson says "Office will work across Windows Phone, iOS and Android."
